Images denoted with an asterisk (*) are taken from the 1963 brochure Training for CAREERS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Cal Poly Humboldt College, Arcata, California..

Chemistry student using the Precision Double-Hook Torsion Balance, c. 1961Chemistry student using the Precision Double-Hook Torsion Balance, c. 1961 (44k). This picture, from the 1961 Sempervirons yearbook, was captioned: "Humboldt student Merv Hanson doing precise measuring work in physical science department." Merv later returned to become a professor of chemistry at Humboldt.
Biology students working with microscope and cultures, c. 1961Biology students working with microscope and cultures, c. 1961 (40k). This picture, from the 1961 Sempervirons yearbook, was captioned: "Carl Lehman and Harry Sen examine a slide under the careful supervision of Dr. James Welch." Dr. Welch taught biology at Humboldt from 1959-86.
Students performing an electrochemical titration, c.1963*Students performing an electrochemical titration, c.1963 (66k). The students are using the Leeds & Northrup K-3 potentiometer and Galvanometer. Note also the Epply standard cell in the forground. The Rudolph Research Polarimeter can be seen on the table behind the students. All of this equipment was purchased with the construction of the new Science building (now Science A) c. 1960.
Analytical Chemistry Balance Room, c. 1963*Analytical Chemistry Balance Room, c. 1963 (50k). The students are looking at the workings of one of the Mettler balances purchased with new construction money c. 1960. (The young man is Greg Bowman, who later became a member of the Chemistry Department faculty.) Note the Christian Becker chain balance and Christian Becker density balance in the background.
